I love cooking and I enjoy reading Food Blogs the most. Before the WWW I was perfectly content reading cook books; I mean reading them just for reading pleasure and not to find or even cook one of the recipes. Food reflects a lot about different cultures and is something that can be shared without the knowledge of a foreign language.
Both of my parents were from North Germany and I lived in North Germany (Heikendorf) for the first 5 years of my life.
I grew up loving smoked eel, Schillerlocken ( smoked dogfish belly flaps. The golden colored belly flaps of the dogfish resemble the hair locks of the German poet, Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805), hence the name "Schillerlocken."), and Nordsee Krabben.
Krabben are tiny shrimp that have a slightly sweet taste. 'Krabben pulen' is what deshelling the tiny shrimp is called. It is tedious work with very little reward per piece. It takes about 10 minutes to deshell enough shrimp for one portion. You can see how small the shrimp are in comparison to the egg.
I found a great Northern German Food Blog.
